An Evening on the River – 2017

A spectacular sunset on the Chattahoochee drew friends and supporters of the Georgia-Alabama Land Trust to the riverbank on the evening of Saturday, October 21st . The brilliant fall weather and the stunning river vista helped make GALT’s fundraiser, our Annual Open Space Event, held in the Atlanta home of Bo and Eileen DuBose, a great success. Guests mingled on the three-tiered patio enjoying small plates of Southern quail, cheese grits, beef shortribs and roasted fall vegetables, listening to live music from The Haraway Brothers, their eyes drawn to the natural serenity of the river landscape below.

The DuBose home sits on what Civil War expert Bo DuBose describes as the “military crest” of the hill, next to trenches dug by Confederate troops. The military crest, Bo explains, is high enough on the hill to have height advantage, but not on the very top where you are silhouetted against the skyline. Where the Civil War military built trenches, he says, often proved to be the best building spots, and only a few sites from the maneuvers around Atlanta between Union and Confederate troops remain intact.

Yet thanks to the generosity of the late Frances Woodruff DuBose, Bo’s mother, the view enjoyed by the evening’s guests is now permanently preserved as open space under a conservation easement held by GALT. It proved to be the perfect setting for GALT’s fundraiser, which included a silent auction and several Fund a Conservation Need items for our land stewards.
